Using Chapter 16 pages 205-210 and Chapter 49 pages 511-518, write a six-paragraph evaluation of your second source following the guidelines outlined below.

Your evaluation must include:

A concise summary of your source
A thesis that states your judgement of the source
3 reasons why the audience should accept your judgement (based on 3 criteria areas)
An explanation of how well your source meets the criteria and support each reason with evidence
A counterclaim that acknowledges other opinions and refutes those opinions (NOTE: this may require additional research)
A conclusion that restates your overall judgement
A Works Cited page (if an additional source was used for the counterclaim or for research on the author/publisher, you must include that source info as well)

The criteria areas in which the source must be judged are as follows:

How do you know the author is trustworthy?
What are the author’s credentials?
What experience does the author have?
How long has the author been writing?
How many pieces of writing has the author published?

How do you know the information is accurate?
Has the article been peer-reviewed?
Who is the publisher or sponsor?
Can this company be verified?
How long has this company been in operation?
Where did the author get his or her facts?

Is the source relevant to today’s current society? Why?
When was it published?

How well does the author explain the topic?
Do you recognize ideas that you’ve run across in other sources?
Does this source support or challenge your own position?
Does it include other useful information?

How is the text written?
What is the level of the source?
What literary techniques does the author use?
Does the author use a particular format or style?

What is the author’s stance?
What arguments does the author make?
How persuasive do you find the arguments?
What rhetorical strategies are used?
What can you tell about the intended audience and purpose?

** The three criteria with stars do not need text evidence for support, but it will require some form of evidence to prove your point.

NOTE: a minimum of 3 areas must be addressed within your body paragraphs. For an explanation of each area refer to planning sheet #2 and pages 511-513 in your Norton textbook.

***It is strongly recommended to read Chapters 16 & 49 before completing this assignment***

Purpose: Why are you writing this assignment? What does it matter? When writing your research paper, it is imperative that you fully understand the focus of each source. Analyzing the content, reliability, and validity of the writer requires you to think critically about the text and determine if the source is appropriate for your research paper.
