Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to assess which communication concepts/skills are used by individuals working in a position that aligns with your career goals. To complete the assignment, you will conduct an interview with an individual working in a career field in which you aspire to work. The interview will focus on the communicative aspects of the position. After conducting the interview, you will compose a 5-7 page paper that describes the interview experience and how you see skills and concepts from our course applying to the information given in the interview.

Completing the assignment:

1. Choose your participant

The person you will interview should be an individual with a wealth experience in your field of choice. Additional information about selecting a participant can be found on the assignment FAQ page.

2. Set up your interview!

Here are some things to say/keep in mind as you set up the interview during your initial phone call/contact with them:

1. Your name, your school, and why you would like to interview them: “I’m currently a student at USD and I am conducting a project about what communication skills I might need to succeed in this industry.”

2. The length of time the interview will take: “The interview would take about an hour.”

3. A good day and time to meet.

4. A clear description of the experience: “I am interested in hearing about your day to day experiences and thoughts on what communication skills I might need if I want to succeed in a similar position someday. I’m not looking for a job but just trying to gather information for this project and for my own career building experience.”

3. Conduct the interview!

1. You might want to tape the interview so that you can return to it while you are writing your paper. HOWEVER, if you tape the interview you MUST ask for their permission. Make sure they are aware that they are being taped.

2. If you do not tape the interview make sure to take detailed notes. Also, make sure that your participant knows that you are taking notes for the purpose of the assignment and are still actively and respectfully listening to them.

3. Review the interview questions before you meet to make sure you are ready. You might want to adjust the questions depending on the field.

4. THANK THEM for their time and send a follow up thank you card or email.

4. Analyze your interview and write that paper!

After interviewing your chosen individual, you will compose a paper examining the skills highlighted in the interview. Your paper should be approximately 5-7 pages.

1 pg. Introduction

Provide an introduction into your chosen career and the individual you interviewed. Why did you choose to interview this individual? Is his or her job exactly like the job you want orin a similar field? How did you locate the individual?

3-4 pg. Communication skills

Describe at least two communication skills or concepts from each chapter in Unit Two (Listening, Verbal Communication, Nonverbal Communication, and Conflict Management) that you and your participant discussed during your interview. Keep in mind that your participant might not explicitly voice these skills using the same language or vocabulary that we use in class as they might not be aware of official terms. For example, your participant might talk about the importance of dressing appropriately or giving a firm handshake, which you could then discuss in terms of what we cover in the nonverbal chapter. It is up to you to translate your discussion into course terms.

1-2 pg. Final reflection

Describe some final thoughts on the experience. What did you learn through the course of the assignment? How do you think you can take the knowledge from the interview and apply it to your future goals?

In addition to adhering to the guidelines listed above make sure you are avoiding any grammatical, semantic, or syntax errors. In addition to using the tools that Microsoft word provides such as spell check, be sure to proofread your paper carefully and correct any errors that cannot be caught from spell check or by your computer. It is a great idea to finish your paper a few days early and then return to it with an eye for these specific mistakes. Or, you might print your paper and read it aloud. Though class time might not allow for us to participate in a peer review in class, you are also welcome to exchange your papers with another student to check the others for these types of errors. Your papers should adhere to APA guidelines which include the following:

One-inch margins on all sides of the paper
12-pt. Times New Roman font
Any time you cite the book correctly in-text cite it (Last names of authors, year) if you are paraphrasing. (Late name of authors, year; pg. number) if you are citing directly from a specific page.
You do not need a title page for the assignment.
