Communication /Position Paper

**Human Communication Class**

The purpose of the position paper is for you to apply what we are learning in class to your communication experiences in “the real world.” You are involved in a variety of communication transactions every day at school, work, home, your house of worship, as a consumer, and in leisure activities. This paper focuses on one concept (not two or more, but one) which interests you and which you observe in your personal experiences of communicating with others.

Begin with a communication concept that interests you -or- with an interesting situation you can analyze. You may choose any one topic the book discusses even if we don’t cover it in class. Narrower concepts tend to work better than broad abstract concepts. Avoid choosing a definition of a term. Choose a concept.

SAMPLE topics:

“The third type is relationship goals—building, maintaining, or terminating bonds with others.” (McCornack & Ortiz, p. 7)

“Self-esteem is the overall value you assign to yourself.” (McCornack & Ortiz, p. 35)

DIRECTIONS

Start your paper with the statement from the book that you are using as your thesis. Cite it (like in my example above)!
Explain what the statement means by paraphrasing or elaborating on the explanation given in the book. Do not copy verbatim from the book. Put the explanation in your own words; how you understand it.
Apply this principle to your own personal experience as a communicator. Your own observation or experience is the most important part of this assignment and should be the majority of the paper. This is not a report. It is an observation
Describe your experience so the reader, who was not there, can understand it clearly. “Telling your story” is a good way to approach this part.
Explain how the chosen communication concept is illustrated by the experience you just described. Another way to look at it is to show how you can now see your experience through the lens of communication theory and skills.
Talk about how you interpreted the situation differently now that you have been studying communication.
Add any other thoughts you may have that would round out your observation. Dig deep. Superficial treatments of the concept are not meant for you or for me.
Throughout the paper: be specific and give examples. Make it clear that you understand and can apply the concept to your own communication experience. It is not necessary to identify people by name–family members, co-workers, and friends have privacy rights too.
