Your task for your Independent Study Unit will be to design a trip across Canada.

Trip Rules:

You must travel through all ten Provinces and three Territories beginning in a city of your choice.
You must write nine (9) reports (called profiles):
three capital cities
three national parks of your choice
three major highlight destinations (major tourists attractions)
Note: Each one must be in a different province and territory.
One profile must be from a Territory.
Your daily travel mustn’t be more than 500 km.
You can stop anywhere you like at the end of the day.

The following information must be included in your finished product:

Please note: when it states at least (ie. state at least three historical events…), this indicates the minimum requirements.

Map of Route
Using a blank map of Canada, you will indicate the route you are taking.
plot and label each of the nine profile locations
trace your route with a neat line
complete your map using all the map requirements (legend, scale, compass rose, and a title ISU Trip Route)

Trip Itinerary
List your daily start and stop locations (nearest town/city and province) and the number of kilometres traveled. ie: Ottawa, Ontario to Toronto, Ontario (448 Km)

Three City Profiles
Each city profile should be in point form, approximately one page long and include the following titles for each topic.
Each city profile should include the following information:

Coordinates: This is the latitude and longitude of the city/town. (include units!)
Major Historic Events: list at least three important historical events in point-form format. (ie: when was it founded, why was the area settled, who settled the region, important events that occurred there…)
Landform and Vegetation Regions: State the proper name of both the landform region and vegetation region that the city is located in. (use the text!)
Climate
Describe the factors that affect the climate of the city (LOWERN).
State the average temperature and precipitation for each of the four seasons.
Cultural Cross-Section
List at least five facts describing the cultural make-up (major ethnic groups, or languages found)
Industry
Which industry is the city known for? (primary, secondary, tertiary, or quaternary)
Give at least three specific examples (ie. logging, financial, …).
A minimum of one scenic picture of city

Three National Park Profiles:
A national park profile should be about one page long and include a title for each topic you provide information on.

History
When the park was designated a National Park?
What important natural features does the park contain?
Location and Area
Where is the park located?
How big is it? (km2)
Flora
Describe the dominant type of vegetation
Identify at least two specific species (ie. White Pine)
Provide at least two images of specific species
Fauna
Identify at least two interesting species found in the park.
Provide at least two images of specific species
Endangered Species
List any protected or endangered species in the park
Include a picture
Recreational Activities
Describe at least two recreational activities in the park.
Be specific to that park by including specific names of campsites, rivers, etc… For example: In Yoho National Park, you can backcountry camp at Lake O’Hara, and canoe on the Kicking Horse River.
Include at least two scenic pictures of the park

Three Major Highlight Destinations:
Beyond the cities and national parks you are visiting you will also choose three highlight destinations (major tourist attractions) along the way that are of interest to you that you would like to visit.

Note: the following locations are not acceptable highlight destinations:

[Anne of] Green Gables, West Edmonton Mall, CN Tower (they’re overused — search for an attraction you’ve never heard of!)
For each highlight destination you choose you must provide:

at least half a page overview of the particular place (point form)
include at least one image of the site.

Bibliography
You must keep a list of all sources of information, and list them at the end of each profile.
For each profile you must have at least three source of information:
A magazine source or a book source. (ie. tour guides, Canadian Geographic magazine, an atlas, textbook…)
A web source. This cannot be Wikipedia!

Format Options:

Option I: Travel Folder

This can also be in electronic format such as Microsoft Word or other office software.

The front page of your folder must include the following:

A title — You are to come up with a slogan for your trip across Canada. This should be decided at the end of your research. What sentence can you come up with that captures the experience you have gone on?
Visual Images — Your front page must also include an image (or images) which represent the journey you have embarked upon.
Your name, date and teachers name must be put on bottom
Be sure that all of your information is neatly secured within the folder and that there is nothing loose within it.

Option II: Power Point Presentation

The power point presentation option must include the following requirements:

Title slide with the slogan for your trip across Canada
A slide containing the itinerary (like a table of content)
Separate slide including title for each city (including image)
Slide with map of route
Several slides for each profile, including text and images.
All other information required must be placed on other slides.

The use of subtitles, text, images and graphs must be utilized to create an interesting and attractive presentation.

Option III: Other

New multimedia software and web based media is coming out often and if you think you could demonstrate the same information in a different program, try asking your teacher for permission.
