Poe, Edgar Allan. “The Cask of Amontillado.” The Norton Introduction to Literature, edited by Kelly J. Mays, Norton, 2016, pp.173-178. (info is good needs hanging indent)

Each essay should have a unique title, a thesis statement, at least three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You should also include Works Cited entries for all of your sources (including the stories/poems/plays from our textbook). Include correctly used key terms from any point in the semester (put the term in bold in your essay).

Here are some ideas for your consideration:

What role did James Baldwin’s personal experiences and real-life background play in influencing his short story “Sonny’s Blues”? (Racism, bigotry, etc.)

How did Edgar Allan Poe’s short, sad, and depressed life influence his creation of such horror masterpieces as The Cask of Amontillado and The Raven? (Drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, etc.)

What role did Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s own personal struggles with depression and mental illness play in her writing of “The Yellow Wallpaper.” (Here—the student writer would have great leeway to discuss a variety of feminist issues from the early 20th Century (i.e. how women were often patronized and marginalized by men, etc., and often forced into living their lives according to the societal norms of the day, rather than by their own hopes, dreams, and desires.)

What role does race and ethnicity play in Toni Morrison’s writing in general, and in her short story “Recitatif” in particular? How have her own personal experiences in dealing with race and feminist issues informed and shaped her writing over the years? Why did she make the decision to keep the racial identities of the two main characters in “Recitatif” ambiguous?

The above are just a handful of ideas—you may write on one of these if you choose. Or you can always come up with an original topic of your own which I strongly encourage in order to promote independent thinking and growth as a writer. Should you decide to come up with your own topic to explore
