In the Course Outline it states:
“Students are required to write a research paper where they identify a sport organization that has a problem. The term paper requires the student to critically assess the problem, and then come up with a plan to solve the problem. More specific details will follow in a separate term paper handout.”
What you are reading right now is the Term Paper Handout.
Here are some past issues/policies/situations (that you cannot use) that would make for good papers:
How should FIFA deal with racism in soccer?
How should Canada’s Olympic flag bearer be determined?
How should the Chatham Jr. Maroons get a new arena?
How can the Petrolia Jets draw more fans?
Working individually, everyone needs to pick a topic. This topic should be topical (needs to have been an issue in the sports world in the past 12 months), and it must have to do with the business management side of sports (NOT issues having to do with player development or coaching. Please do not write an essay on who your favourite team should trade, or that they need to fire the coach.) There could be some topics that touch on such things (new league policies governing player behaviour stemming from players going into the stands to confront fans, etc.). In such cases, please check with the person who’ll be grading your paper for advice. Please note: A good paper will focus on an organization that has the power to make changes. A bad paper topic is “________ in sports.” Greed? Drugs? Fan violence? There is no one organization that governs ALL of sport, so such broad topics are unfeasible.
This paper boils down to you doing one thing- making an argument. You’ll need to establish that there is an issue at stake (use roughly the first 2/3 of the paper to convince the grader that there is indeed a problem), and then address all sides of the issue to make a recommendation in the final 1/3 of the paper that solves the problem. To make a good argument, you’ll need to do a lot of research to know what you are talking about. Feel free to use your text and/or the readings in the packet to help you make your argument. You will also need to do much more extra research (academic journal articles, newspapers, magazines, websites, etc.).
Remember to read ALL the requirements for the paper found in the course outline. Also:

An example of a properly APA formatted title page will be posted separately.
I’d get thinking about your topic now (if you haven’t already). Think of what topic area interests you (amateur sport policy, facility construction, public relations, pro sport marketing, etc.) and think back over the last year and try to remember issues that have come up that you can try to solve. Drawing a blank? Do some research through the library or google, or read the sports page with this project in mind, etc.
Any questions? Please ask your TA (they will be grading your papers).
