– The only work I have done is this : “The story Eveline is shows the struggles of a woman that is oppressed by patriarchal ideologies. She lives with an abusive father and works the streets to support him, as well as their existence. Although her father’s abuse was more physical to her brother and late brother growing up, she was abused in more psychological ways. She meets this man Frank who promises her a new life if she escapes to another country. While the promise of a new life sounds wonderful, she has a guilt of leaving her father behind. Ultimately she ends up staying in her current situation with her father as Frank leaves to start his life in another country.
The theory that I feel applies to this story is the feminist criticism. This story is the classic example of a woman who lives a hard life in an abusive situation, yet still feels the need to stay oppressed as to not let her a male figure down. It’s further exemplified through the hidden relationship with Frank where he promises her a new life but she is still not independent and still at the will of how he would want her to live. Her occupation as a sex worker on Saturday nights further shows the limited availability of occupations available for women during the time. The occupation itself provides her compensation at the meeting of a male’s sexual needs.
The basis of this theory is to promote gender equality. While situations like Eveline’s may not be as explicitly obvious these days, her situation is still occurring for many women. Most societies still are male dominated and the oppression women face is still very much in existence.
Trifles by Susan Glaspell
Trifles by Susan Glaspell depict a dark, melancholy, and lonely setting. The author uses symbolic objects to help the audience understand the characters. The three physical objects that are primarily used as symbols are a birdcage, bird, and rope (Glaspell, 2010). The essay focuses on the physical object of the birdcage and represents Mrs. Wright, trapped in her marriage and unable to escape it. The broken door of the birdcage represents her broken marriage to Mr. Wright. Furthermore, it shows that Mrs. Wright has an opportunity to escape from her marriage and become a free woman. At one point, the cage door had a lack, and a bird was locked inside it. It shows that Mrs. Wright was locked up from society at one point since Mr. Wright thought that by keeping away Mr. Wright from society, she would never be able to know his true behavior. Furthermore, apart from the birdcage door being broken, it has suffered significant damage, and this is confirmed by Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, who confirm the damage (Glaspell, 2010). The damage demonstrates how a violent character Mr. wright is. Because of his irrational anger, Mr. Wright can’t let his wife be free, and to get her freedom, Mrs. Wright has to struggle.
The birdcage evokes emotions of loneliness, and this is because Mrs. Wright feels lonely in her marriage since she has limited space to do her duties. Her neighbors say that she rarely goes anywhere despite not having any children who would keep her busy. On the other hand, her husband works all day and has no company when he comes home (Glaspell, 2010). Therefore, it seems like Mrs. Wright is in a cage since she rarely interacts with people. Also, the author used birdcage to show how gender plays a key role in society. As a woman, it was acceptable for Mr. Wright to put Mrs. Wright in a state of isolation without being judged, but when she loses her mind and kills her husband, the society declares her guilty before being tried in front of a jury. The attitude towards women is that they are of no significance in society, and they are treated as objects (Glaspell, 2010). Also, instead of people being concerned that her husband was abusing her, she is criticized for her unkempt home and kitchen, and this solidifies her isolation.
The birdcage is the most significant symbol when it comes to the creation of dramatic action. Without the birdcage, there would not have been the suspense of what happened to the bird. The inclusion of the birdcage enabled Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale to be suspicious about the bird and later find it violently killed (Guswanto & Husna, 2019). Furthermore, it is the birdcage that makes the audience curious about what happened to the bird and what caused its killing. Also, trifles are little things that when they tend to ignore while the women tend to notice, and the birdcage is one of them. The authors make it known that the women who noticed what had happened to the birdcage helped solve the case. Therefore, the author advocates for feminism and encourages society to recognize their capability instead of disregarding them. Men need to stop stereotyping women by believing that their opinions should only be about household duties. It is the women who were keen and used the birdcage to establish the correct evidence.
