social problems

Exam Instructions and Guidelines:
 This exam is open-book, open-notes, and I encourage you to revisit our sources in the textbook and on Moodle as you work. I ask that you work independently and cite all of your sources in parentheses.
 Please type your essay using Word or similar software. Please save it as either a Word doc (.doc or .docx) or as a pdf file. Please do not save it as a Pages file, rtf, or another file type.
 I prefer that exams are single-spaced.
 If you’re going into as much detail as you should, your exam should be around 5,000 words. If
it’s much shorter than that, you’re likely not covering some important material or you’re not
going into enough detail.
 This exam is designed so that you can adequately answer the questions using only sources
assigned in class. There is no need to incorporate outside material (this is not a research paper.) If you choose to draw on outside sources, be sure they are academic sources and that you cite them properly.
 I do not have a preferred citation style, but you must cite your sources in parentheses throughout your essay. Include a works cited or references page for any sources that are not assigned in class. See the example essays on Moodle for samples of past student work, how they cite sources, answer questions, etc.
 Use formal, sociological terminology throughout this essay. Rather than saying “Families that don’t have much money will have a hard time buying food,” you should say “Families experiencing poverty are also prone to food insecurity, unstable housing, and inadequate childcare options.”
 It is my assumption that you will complete this exam independently and will cite all of your sources. If your exam appears to be similar to one of your classmates, or if the college’s plagiarism software detects evidence of uncited work (from the internet, for example), I will submit your essay to the Dean of Liberal Arts for plagiarism review. Please don’t cheat – if you’re feeling like you might be tempted to cheat, just ask me for help instead.
 I offer feedback on drafts right up until the deadline, however, I go to bed very early! (Like, 8:30pm early.) So, if you want feedback, email me in the afternoon or early evening at the latest.
 When you are finished, please upload this exam to the appropriate dropbox on Moodle. If you have uploaded it correctly, you will receive an email at your KVCC email address confirming that it was submitted.

Drawing extensively on class material, please write an essay that answers all of the following questions:
 Explain, in your own words, what sociologists mean when they talk about economic inequality, poverty, and social stratification. What are some of the causes and consequences of economic inequality?
 What are the biggest problems facing kids and families today? How are these problems related to poverty? Think of poverty as both a cause and a consequence of other social problems.
 What are some social problems that are experienced by specific races, ethnicities, and genders? What factors make these groups vulnerable to these specific problems? Consider historical, structural/institutional, and cultural factors.
