1. Locate two news stories online that discuss two different social problems. You can locate news
stories in one of two ways:
a. Scan through a local newspaper ( or a national newspaper
( or Do NOT choose opinion pieces or partisan articles.
b. Search for news stories through the database Nexis Uni. You can access this database
through the UHCL library website. On the homepage of the library website, click “databases,”
then search for the Nexis Uni database. In Nexis Uni, search for news stores on topics of your

2. Choose two news stories. After reading the news stories and deciding exactly what social problems
they are describing, select one or more social theorist or social theory to analyze each social
problem. You may use one or more theorists/theories for each social problem/article. For example,
if you choose an article on homelessness, you may apply the ideas of Conflict theorists like Marx,
Dahrendorf, and C. Wright Mills to analyze the problem. Or, you may look at things from a SI point
of view, and apply George Herbert Mead and Irving Goffman to the same problem of

3. For each of your news articles, answer the following questions:
a. What is a summary of the substantive issue(s) in the article?
b. How would the theorists understand or approach this problem? Be specific. Use terms
and language used by the theorist(s) to describe the problem.
c. What kinds of solutions would the theorists come up with to solve the social problems?

4. The paper should be divided into two sections: one section for each story. Include the title of the
article along with the full http:// address of the article, and then your analysis of that article.
Repeat these steps for the second article.

into a browser. If the article doesn’t open, go back and retrieve the correct link.
6. You do not need to consult additional theory books (use the Dillon textbook), but if you do, please provide a citation.

7. Feel free to choose from a variety of sociological problems you find in the newspapers (poverty,
homelessness, teen pregnancies, lack of affordable healthcare, social media use, lack of political
participation, racism, gender discrimination, crime, bullying, etc.).

Grading criteria: This essay will be evaluated on 1) following directions; 2) mastery of relevant theory; 3) critical thought; and 4) writing quality/grammar/spelling/punctuation.
