The ‘why’ of this assignment
This is to assess your knowledge of:
the basic “viewpoints” on the nature of TEs – Sorensen, Brown’s Platonism, Norton’s Argument View, Nersessian’s Model-based view.
how to construct & write a philosophical argument
(So: I’m really open to any alterations, as long as they can credibly give me the same info on your learning.)
The ‘what’ of this assignment
Write a short paper (max 1000 words) on some pretty focused aspect of one of our early papers on “the general theory of TEs” – the papers on the overall “view” of what they are and how they work.
The topic itself is pretty open; the goal is that you write something that shows me you:
understand, broadly, some of the issues involved in what exactly TEs are,
understand and have though some about a specific aspect of one of these “views”
(I am assuming that if you can do #2 well, on some specific thing, then you know or *can* know ALL the views fairly well.)
#1 should probably happen as you do #2 – the only way I could think you didn’t have some sense of “the big picture” while talking about some part of it, is if you were really excessively narrow from the get-go. #2 gets done by you accurately presenting/discussing some issue (e.g., the difference between Brown’s ‘direct’ and ‘constructive’ TE types) and evaluating it on some aspect (e.g., a TE that doesn’t fit neatly in a type; disputing one of Brown’s examples as not really fitting in a type.)
I’m looking for a fairly modest “reflection” type paper here, so my initial prompt is: find some part of a paper or claim it makes that you find interesting (and understandable!), and either pick a fight with it or “use” it with an example TE (that the paper doesn’t use.)
