HIS 122: What were the social, political, and economic effects of World War I on Europe?
Please limit your answer to pre-1933.
Basic details for all classes. Answer the topic above in a 1200-1800 word essay with a thesis
You must use at least five library sources to answer the question: at least two
secondary sources and three primary sources.
Papers will be graded on how well you use of Library resources (books, articles, primary sources), the analysis of the topic, and the
quality of your writing (spelling, usage, and grammatical errors should be kept to an absolute
minimum). You must provide MLA parenthetical citations for interpretations or factual points
that are not your own [Example: (Smith 100)] and you must include a “Works Cited” page that
does not count towards your word count. All papers will be graded based on the accompanying
rubric and all will be submitted via Canvas and subject to “Turnitin” anti-plagiarism software.
Library instruction session and Library Resources.
You are required to partake in one online (through Canvas) library instruction session around the
fifth week of the semester – your instructor will let you know when that will occur. You can
either do the session using your private computer or at the library or computer lab. At that
session you will be introduced to the appropriate library resources, including the guide
specifically created for this assignment. Ideally, by the end of the session you will leave with an
understanding of the libraries collections and required sources for the paper. For this assignment
you must use the library to find at least two secondary sources (book, book chapter, academic
article) and three primary sources that deal with the effects of WWI and all must come from
sources found in our library. Outside or private sources will not be allowed.
Furthermore, the library staff will be there to help you specifically with this project.
Citing Sources and works cited page. When in doubt cite. For this paper parenthetical
references are fine. At the end of sentence that needs a citation place the author and page number
in parenthesis (Smith 100). You should provide citations for direct quotes and any factual or
interpretive points that are not your own. Any source information that you provide in-text must
correspond to the source information on the “Works Cited” page. Please use MLA (Modern
Language Association) style for all citations and for the “works cited” page which should be the
last page of your paper. For an overall guide to MLA and how to cite books, articles, internet
please see: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/. In MLA style, referring to the works of
others in your text is done by using what is known as parenthetical citation. This method
involves placing relevant source information in parentheses after a quote or a paraphrase. When
in doubt cite it! For example: “Napoleon saved France” (Smith 87). Therefore, on your “Works
Cited” page you must have the corresponding full citation for the book: Smith, John, Fake
Citations. NY: Norton, 2017.
On the last page of your paper please create a works cited page an alphabetical list of the sources
(books, articles) you have used in your paper on the last page of the paper. For a book, the
author’s name appears in last name, first name format.
